SPARK Foundation is dedicated to empowering the next generation through free life education programming, fostering personal growth and breaking down barriers to access higher education.
As its volunteer program grew, managing opportunities and volunteer participation through the website became increasingly difficult. We designed and built a volunteer platform integrated directly with the foundation’s existing website, giving the organization a centralized way to manage opportunities and giving volunteers a dedicated place to discover, register and track their participation.
A growing volunteer program needed more than a contact form
Volunteer opportunities were being managed through the organization’s website, but nothing centrally connected those opportunities with the people volunteering for them.
The leadership team needed a way to manage opportunities without relying on a developer or maintaining separate records by hand. At the same time, volunteers needed a simple way to discover available opportunities, register for them, view their commitments, track their hours and keep a record of their participation.
The challenge was building something that worked for both sides of the volunteer relationship.
Built into the website, not alongside it
We built a volunteer management platform that connects directly with the foundation’s public website.
For the foundation
Leadership and administrators manage volunteer opportunities directly through the system. They can:
- Add new opportunities
- Edit existing opportunities
- Remove opportunities
- Manage opportunity details
- View volunteer registrations
- Track volunteer participation
Changes made by the leadership team are reflected directly on the public-facing website.
For volunteers
Volunteers get a dedicated experience for managing their participation. They can:
- Browse available opportunities
- Register for volunteer positions
- View their upcoming commitments
- Track volunteer hours
- Maintain a record of their participation
The result is a connected experience, rather than website content and administrative records kept separately.
Two experiences, one set of data
The platform was designed around the needs of two primary users, each with their own path through it.
Organization: create → manage → coordinate → track. Leadership runs the volunteer program from a centralized interface without needing technical assistance.
Volunteer: discover → register → participate → track. Volunteers manage their own participation through a dedicated portal.
Both experiences are connected to the same underlying data.
Less administration, better visibility
The foundation gained a centralized system for managing its volunteer program, and volunteers gained a dedicated place to discover and manage their participation.
Most importantly, the public website and the administrative platform no longer need to be maintained independently. When the foundation adds or changes an opportunity, the underlying system handles the connection between the administrative experience and the public site.
The best systems don’t just give people new tools. They connect the tools they already depend on.
